TNT’s Marv Albert said during the back side of last night’s Knicks-Celtics Game 2 about the New York squad on the floor at the time…”I don’t mean this disrespectfully but it’s Carmelo and a bunch of guys.”
Anytime someone puts a disclaimer at the beginning of a statement…Marv did mean it disrespectfully. Like…”I don’t mean to gossip but”…and here comes the gossip.
Admittedly, most basketball fans watched the entire game with their jaws disconnected…mouths open. It was one amazing evening at the Gahh-den. So hard to try to piece together…but on a night when Amar’e Stoudemire was pushing his Life Alert button early (severe back spasms) and Spike Lee was pushing his Send button on Twitter late (severe lack of foul calls on the road)…the Celtics travel to the Big Apple up 2-0.
With Chauncey Billups in a suit and Amar’e laid out on the ground like he was going to be laid to rest in one, Carmelo Anthony poured in 42 points and nabbed 17 rebounds. He actually had 13 boards halfway through the 3rd quarter.
It was the kind of night best suited for fans of the bizarre…with Albert and sidekick Steve Kerr saying how much the Knicks were in trouble…while the game was tied.
In the first half…if the Knicks had displayed any transition defense and didn’t let Rajon Rondo have run out after run out…Boston might have been run out of the building. The Knicks were up by one at half, but the Celts had 16 fast break points to their one lone bucket.
Rondo was as critical in keeping Boston relevant as Anthony to New York. His 30 points and 7 assists mostly came from inside the paint.
And speaking of inside the paint…in the final, critical stages the Knicks’ Jared Jeffries drove the lane. Glen Davis stepped aside and Kevin Garnett waved. In that moment, considering what had transpired in this series to-date…it was like the cherry on my sundae of dessert-ing Boston’s chance for an NBA title. Furthermore…the series they’re in right now is far from over…and being up two games to none never looked so shaky.
