Strip If You Like…The Memories Will Last Forever

USC became the first school forced to vacate a college football title yesterday when the BCS voted to strip them of their 2004 Championship.

Strip if you like…the memories will last forever.

The absurdity of this whole “vacated” concept started back in 1971 (I was 13 at the time) when Western Kentucky and Villanova (which is just down the road from yours truly) were both erased from the 1971 Final Four record books when their stars were found to have signed with agents during their final seasons.

Now, I barely qualified for teen status at that point but I still vividly recall seeing both those schools play in that Final Four.  It was held at the Houston Astrodome.  My hometown Wildcats topped those Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a classic 92-89, 2 OT thriller…and then gave dynasty UCLA all they wanted in the Championship before falling to the Bruins 68-62.  ‘Nova’s Howard Porter was voted the MVP even in a losing effort.

I remember most of that Final Four to this very day.  I saw it.  I felt it.  I lived it.

You can’t vacate memories with the stroke of a pen or a show of hands.

I also saw that awesome 2004 USC football squad beat down Oklahoma 55-19 in the Orange Bowl to win their Championship…which has now been “vacated.”

OK, “vacate” it.  Take it out of the record books.  Whomever…do what you feel you have to do.

Trojan players and fans…my memories will last forever.

You didn’t get the letter from the NCAA requiring you to report for mandatory memory “reprogramming?”

  2. JW, isn’t this beyond comprehension? Great comment. Now the arguing is about whether someone else should be awarded the title…and I hear people saying…Oklahoma.

  3. Troy says:

So I guess the memorabilia sold after the game doesn’t exist anymore. So, um, on behalf of all the people who purchased said memorabilia, shall they have their money sent back for a full refund?!

  4. Perhaps we could have that memorabilia signed and traded for tattoos…?
