3 Ways You Know Sports Calendar On Backside Of July

3 ways you know the sports calendar now resides on the backside of July…

1. You have a heightened sense of awareness for things that have been in front of your face all year…and in other years as well..but they usually reside well below your consciousness because so many other events are going on.  An example…watching highlights from major league baseball last night: Boston at Baltimore/New York at Tampa Bay.  For years now these have been “home games” when it comes to crowd noise for the visiting teams.  Yet, watching the video from Boston’s 15-10 triumph and New York’s 5-4 win…it was fascinating to see the home teams scoring runs and virtually no one in the real seats moving a collective muscle.  When the visitors were plating runs, fans were up and highly animated.  Towards the end of July…you take greater note of these things…

2.  And speaking of baseball…you know you’re in the latter stages of July when managers start to lobby shots across the bow of their front offices – through the media – in a desperate attempt to keep their stars and team intact if they feel they have a shot at the post-season with what they have…not to mention for the future.  An example…Tampa Bay Manager Joe Maddon’s comment after a 16-inning loss to the afore-mentioned Red Sox on Sunday night…a 1-0 loss at that.  “My takeaway is that we can beat the Red Sox and they know it.  My takeaway from the 1-0 loss to the Yankees (July 10) is that we can beat the Yankees, and they know it. We’re not going away. It’s just a temporary inconvenience right now.”  Joe not only threw in “happy talk” from the loss that night but a loss several days ago to the other team they are chasing right now in the AL East.  (Tip of the cap to TooSoxy and FDA for elevating Joe’s not-so-subtle press plea with the folks who pay his salary)  Nearing the end of July…

3. And speaking of trying to manipulate an audience in a not-so-subtle manner…ESPN’s Mike & Mike this morning spent a great deal of time trying to whip up “controversy” about USC running back Marc Tyler being suspended for their season opener for comments which appeared on TMZ recently.  The son of famed runner Wendell Tyler and projected starter for this season, Marc joked about what USC’s initials really stand for, player compensation and Kim Kardashian all in one tidy, convenient, suspendable package.  This kind of stuff goes on year round now so it is certainly not exclusive to late July…except for the fact the two Mikes took to their mics to spend a solid portion of the morning debating the “terrible shame” that is college athletes being constantly monitored, watched and even helped along towards doing themselves and their universities damage by the media. (Editorial note here: ESPN is part of said media)  Yes…we certainly are winding down the month of July when THAT is being discussed.

August cannot come soon enough…
