Eagles Best Signing Not Who You’d Think

Last week, Skip Bayless of ESPN “fame” indicated too much was being made of all the Philadelphia Eagles’ recent free agent signings, singling out former Green Bay DT Cullen Jenkins.

His loosely framed point was in Jenkins’ case you “didn’t hear his name” bandied about as the Packers ran the table and won the Super Bowl.

Well…it appears at least a couple of World Champs wish Cullen was still very much a Packer…

Nose Tackle B.J. Raji: “I watch a lot of film, I’m a film junkie.  He is the best interior pass rusher in this league.  Just his ability, his approach, his technique, there’s no way you can replace that.”

Defensive End Ryan Pickett: “He just brought an energy to a team.  He’s a jokester.  Nothing is too serious for him.  His personality, we’re going to miss it.”

Eagles fans…embrace the arrival of Cullen Jenkins.  His 5-year, $25 mil contact might glean the best return on investment of all the new Birds.

  1. I’ve always hated Skip Bayless because I’ve never respected him as a journalist or pundit. It’s one thing to have an opposing point view. It’s another thing to have a schtick to be the constant contrarian. With Bayless, it’s as if he goes out of his way to be a loud-mouth, disrespectful bully when he speaks. Usually when someone has to resort to such tactics, it’s because they don’t have the intelligence to clearly articulate what they want to say. Maybe it’s because they don’t truly have an opinion on a certain subject or maybe they just don’t understand it, or maybe they realize they have an idiotic point of view and their opponent has gotten the better of them so they yell and act stupid….like Bayless. He was on Mike and Mike the other day and I had to turn the program off because I simply can’t listen to him. One of my favorite sports personalities and writers is Mike Greenberg. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. He’s incredibly intelligent, well spoken, and respectful of other people’s opinions. He will vociferously argue his opinion but will listen and give other people the respect of their differing view point. Skip Bayless was speaking to him the other day like he was an unintelligent dolt new to broadcasting and sports and I can’t listen to that. I can’t believe someone like that, is given a microphone to vocalize his garbage.

  2. ESPN usually has Bayless on during the daytime and then hides him away when the “stars” come out at night. He knows why he has a job…to be their daytime “controversial” constant contrarian (as you said). The network can juice their own stories just by slanting them in one direction or another. It certainly doesn’t need a cartoon character like Skip.

This may be the best description of Skip Bayless I’ve ever seen.

  4. I agree, Jonathan. That use of “constant contrarian” was spot on.
